Making Weight in Combat Sports

چکیده
COMBAT SPORTS ARE CATEGORIZED INTO WEIGHT CLASSES INTENDED TO PROMOTE FAIR COMPETITION BY MATCHING OPPONENTS OF EQUAL STATURE AND BODY MASS. MANY ATHLETES AIM TO COMPETE AT THE LIGHTEST WEIGHT POSSIBLE IN THE BELIEF THAT IT WILL OFFER A COMPETITIVE EDGE OVER OPPONENTS. CONSEQUENTLY, COMBAT ATHLETES OFTEN RELY ON ACUTE AND CHRONIC DEHYDRATION AND RESTRICTED ENERGY INTAKE TO MAKE WEIGHT. IN CONTRAST, THIS ARTICLE OUTLINES KEY PRINCIPLES FROM EXERCISE METABOLISM AND NUTRITION THAT COMBAT ATHLETES CAN EMPLOY TO MORE GRADUALLY MAKE WEIGHT AND THEREFORE AVOID THE NEGATIVE HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH TRADITIONAL WEIGHTMAKING STRATEGIES.

متن کاملMild Traumatic Brain Injury: Lessons Learned from Clinical, Sports, and Combat Concussions
Over the past forty years, a tremendous amount of information has been gained on the mechanisms and consequences of mild traumatic brain injuries. Using sports as a laboratory to study this phenomenon, a natural recovery curve emerged, along with standards for managing concussions and returning athletes back to play. Although advances have been made in this area, investigation into recovery and...
متن کاملMuscle contraction velocity, strength and power output changes following different degrees of hypohydration in competitive olympic combat sports.
BACKGROUND It is habitual for combat sports athletes to lose weight rapidly to get into a lower weight class. Fluid restriction, dehydration by sweating (sauna or exercise) and the use of diuretics are among the most recurrent means of weight cutting. Although it is difficult to dissuade athletes from this practice due to the possible negative effect of severe dehydration on their health, athle...
متن کاملGenetic Variants and Mixed Sport Disciplines: A Comparison among Soccer, Combat and Motorcycle Athletes
Background. Soccer, combat sports and motorcycling have all been classified as mixed in terms of their metabolism predominance thus showing a common multifaceted nature of physical requirements, which include aerobic capacity, strength, endurance, power and agility. Objectives. The aim of the current study was to compare allelic and genotype frequencies of four well-known polymorphisms among a...
متن کاملValidity of Hydration Non-Invasive Indices during the Weightcutting and Official Weigh-In for Olympic Combat Sports
BACKGROUND In Olympic combat sports, weight cutting is a common practice aimed to take advantage of competing in weight divisions below the athlete's normal weight. Fluid and food restriction in combination with dehydration (sauna and/or exercise induced profuse sweating) are common weight cut methods. However, the resultant hypohydration could adversely affect health and performance outcomes. ...
